Ecofriendly Organic Rakhis For Auspicious Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is very auspicious festival observed on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shravan.
This festival is all about the love between brothers and sisters. On this day a girl or a woman puts a tilak on her brother’s forehead and ties a rakhi around his wrist in a ritual that reaffirms the bond and support of her brother(s). Brother promises to protect her from all the problems in life and gives her his blessings.
It is believed that, during the Mahabharata Draupadi tied a rakhi on Krishna’s wrist when he had injured his finger while using his sudarshan chakra against the king Shishupalal. While Krishna’s hand was bleeding, Draupadi tore a piece from her sari and tied it around his hand. In return, Krishna vowed that he would always be there to protect Draupadi.
Even,Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore started a mass Raksha Bandhan festival during the Partition of Bengal (1905), in which he encouraged Hindu and Muslim women to tie a rakhi on men from the other community and make them their brothers. The exercise was designed to counter British efforts to create a divide between Hindus and Muslims.
Indian women prefer different type of rachis, some prefer simple rakhis, whereas others go all out and purchase threads that scream style. Those with younger siblings often look for rakhis with cartoons.
The reason for all this effort is simply emotional. For the world, it may be a mere thread, but for most people in India, a rakhi is a symbol of protection and solidarity. Because it holds a special emotion, the person whose hand it is tied on usually feels guilty when discarding it after the festivities. Some people who do not remove them until the threads tear off completely.
These rakhis may have been made from plastic, and chemical colours, and so, they harm the environment. But like every other problem today, this one too has an eco-friendly solution.
A handful of environment-conscious citizens across India have started making rakhis that not only protect nature but can also be grown into plants!
